Description

Handmade Pyrography Depicting Saint Eleutherius

An exceptional image created using the pyrography technique, depicting Saint Eleutherius. This particular image is entirely handmade.

Saint Eleutherius (December 12) was born in the 2nd century AD in Greece (according to some, in Rome) to wealthy parents. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised according to the teachings of the Gospel by his pious and philanthropic mother, Anthia, who became a Christian after hearing the preaching of the Apostle Paul’s disciples.

When Anthia visited Rome, the Bishop of Rome, Anicetus, recognizing the intelligence, strong faith, and pure character of Eleutherius, took him under his protection.
At the age of 15, Eleutherius was ordained as a deacon, and three years later, as a priest. From this position, Eleutherius worked diligently for the teaching of his flock and in charitable deeds. Later, at the age of twenty, by the unanimous vote of the clergy and the people, he became the Bishop of Illyricum, present-day Albania, with the seat in Avlona.

His ordination as a saint was due to the “economy” of God, because of his great virtues and wisdom with which he attracted pagans to Christ. His sweet speech, confirmed by his many miracles, made those in error embrace the Christian truth.

The reputation of Saint Eleutherius’ virtues was so great that it reached Britain. Thus, its king, Lucius, wrote a letter to Eleutherius declaring that he and his people desired to become Christians. Eleutherius immediately responded by sending two men trained in the faith, who catechized and baptized Lucius and his people as Christians.

When Septimius Severus learned of Eleutherius’ Christian activities, he ordered his arrest. After many tortures, Eleutherius was taken by the pagans to the Roman arena. However, the wild animals did not harm him, so they beheaded him along with his mother.

Saint Eleutherius is considered a helper for pregnant women, giving them “safe delivery,” which is why many women invoke his aid and place his icon on them.

Pyrography: Characteristics

Pyrography is an art form that attracts many creators due to the impressive results that can be achieved. It is a painting technique that uses the two primal elements of Nature, wood and fire. With patience and attention to detail, monks create pyrography images, being very careful about mistakes as they cannot be corrected like with a pencil.

This particular image combines the art of engraving with that of pyrography, resulting in an exceptional embossed effect.
