Description

Lithograph of Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri

An amazing silkscreen of Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri, one of the “newly revealed” saints, born in 1384 in Trikala.

To escape from the Ottoman practice of abducting Christian children, he was sent to the Monastery of the Annunciation of the Theotokos on Mount Amomon at the age of just 14. He stayed there as a novice monk until he was 18, after which he was ordained as a monk and later became a priest. His holy relic was discovered by the nun Makaria Desypree on January 3, 1950, at the site where the Holy Monastery of Amomon now stands in Nea Makri, Attica.

According to Christian tradition, after Athens was captured by the Ottomans in 1416, the monastery experienced two destructions. During the first one, Saint Ephraim was praying in a cave on the mountain. The Ottoman soldiers killed the other fathers and monks, and Saint Ephraim buried them upon his return. In 1425, the Turks found him and tortured him cruelly for 8.5 months. He was martyred on May 5, 1426, and the tree where he was crucified and breathed his last still exists today.

Lithograph: Features
Using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk iconographer created this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as he learned in Mount Athos. The image is artistically finished with gold at the four corners, enhancing the artificial aging details.

The image is available upon request.
