Description
Aged Lithograph of Saint Demetrius
An impressive aged lithograph featuring Saint Demetrius, the patron saint and protector of Thessaloniki. In the face of Saint Demetrius, Thessaloniki sees its protector and liberator. Not only because the city’s liberation from the Turks in 1912 coincided with the feast day of the Saint, but also because, according to tradition, before the liberation of Thessaloniki, the city’s residents saw the Saint riding a horse on the White Tower, encouraging them. According to Christian tradition, Saint Demetrius lived and was martyred in Thessaloniki during the reign of Diocletian. He was born into an aristocratic family and served as an officer, yet his position did not prevent him from embracing the Orthodox faith and being baptized a Christian.
Aged Lithograph: Characteristics
This particular image of Saint Demetrius was created using the lithography technique. The monk who crafted this work trained in the iconography workshops of the monasteries of Mount Athos, where he learned both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial aging, a practice to which the monks of Mount Athos pay great attention.
