Gold Printing with Sandblasting – Saint Demetrius the Myrrh-Streaming

Saint Demetrius (280 – 306) is a saint of both the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches and the patron saint of Thessaloniki. He is also honored by Lutheranism and the Anglican Church.

According to hagiographical texts, Demetrius lived and was martyred in Thessaloniki during the reign of Diocletian. Due to issues with the hagiographical tradition, several theories have been proposed since the 19th century regarding the origins of his worship, the most widely accepted by scholars being that there was no Demetrius who was martyred in Thessaloniki, and that his cult originated from Sirmium in Pannonia. Thessaloniki remains an important center for his veneration, with a basilica dedicated to him that dates back to the early Christian period. During Byzantine times, he was venerated as the miraculous protector of the city from enemy besiegers, and a religious and commercial festival, the “Dimitria,” was held in his honor, which was revived as a cultural event in the 1960s. He is one of the most beloved saints in the Orthodox Church, with his feast day on October 26.

Gold Printing with Sandblasting: Features

In the icon depicting Saint Demetrius, the monk iconographer utilized the technique of gold printing to create a work of exceptional beauty. Gold printing is a type of thermographic technique. Thermography refers to the method by which very thin metal foil is applied to surfaces such as wood, leather, cardboard, or plastic through pressure from a heated embossing plate (a cliché). The technique of sandblasting is also used around the image, which involves the process of eroding part or all of a surface by shooting sand under pressure.
