Description

Icon of Saint Anthony on Naturally Aged Wood

A beautiful serigraph depicting Saint Anthony on naturally aged wood.

Saint Anthony was born in 251 AD in Upper Egypt to wealthy and devout parents, whom he lost at a young age. After distributing his possessions to the poor and arranging for the care of his younger sister, he withdrew to a cave in the desert, where he lived as a hermit for 25 years.

During his life as a hermit, Saint Anthony never changed his clothes and taught his disciples to refrain from the goods of the world, considering nothing superior to the love of Christ. He passed away in 356 AD at the age of 105, in perfect physical and spiritual health. Just before his death, he bequeathed his only possessions—a cloak and two sheepskins—to his two closest disciples, Saint Athanasius the Great and Serapion.

Saint Anthony managed to reach the highest levels of ascetic life and was known for his soul’s ability to leave his body while still alive. He became a model for hermits, and the Church has declared him a Great Saint, commemorating his memory on January 17.

The unique aesthetic value of this particular icon lies both in the superb serigraphy technique of the creator and in the aged wood, whose cracks bear witness to the years spent on Mount Athos, thus adding authenticity to the piece.

Since the image is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
