Description

Serigraph with Saints Theodore on Naturally Aged Wood

Saints Theodore are two: Saint Theodore the Tyron (February 17) and Saint Theodore the General (February 8). However, the Church has set the date for both to be celebrated together on the first Saturday after Clean Monday.

Saint Theodore the Tyron distinguished himself in the Roman legion as a new recruit. He lived during the reigns of Emperors Maximian and Galerius. Saint Theodore refused to participate in the pagan sacrifices, leading to his arrest. He confessed to being a Christian and, despite being tortured—his flesh was cut with sharp iron tools and he was thrown into a furnace—he never renounced Christ and gave up his spirit.

Saint Theodore the General was an officer in the Roman army, but when Emperor Licinius learned he was a Christian, he tried to persuade him to convert. Initially, he invited him to sacrifice to idols, but Theodore refused. Later, Theodore attended a grand feast where, instead of sacrificing to the idols, he broke them into pieces and gave them to the poor to sell. When Licinius saw this, he ordered his arrest. Despite the torture, Theodore never denied Christ, and finally, the soldiers crucified him. However, as he did not die, the emperor ordered that his head be cut off.

The exceptional quality and aesthetic superiority of this icon come not only from the impressive work of the iconographer monk but also from the wood used as the base for this magnificent artwork. It is made from naturally aged wood that comes from monasteries of Mount Athos, which are being renovated. This method creates beautiful works of art that carry with them a piece of the history of the Holy Mount Athos outside its boundaries.

Since the image is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
