Description

Icon with Saints Peter and Paul on Naturally Aged Wood

A beautiful icon featuring two very important figures in Christianity, the Apostles Peter and Paul (June 29).

The Apostle Peter, the leader of the Apostles, was the brother of Apostle Andrew, and they both worked as fishermen. Jesus called him Cephas (in Aramaic, “Kefa,” and in Greek, “Petros”), meaning “Rock,” to emphasize the stability of his character. He was the disciple who, “before the rooster crows, will deny Me three times,” but unlike Judas, who betrayed Him, “he went out and wept bitterly..” Peter traveled, preaching, baptizing, founding churches, and ordaining bishops, until he reached Rome. There, when he learned that he would be arrested, he tried to leave. As he was leaving the city, he saw Christ going in the opposite direction, carrying a cross. Peter asked Him, “Where are You going, Lord?” and Christ answered, “I am going to Rome to be crucified again.” At that moment, Peter realized that he must endure martyrdom, and returning to Rome, he surrendered. He even asked to be crucified upside down, feeling unworthy of suffering a martyrdom like that of Christ.

The Apostle Paul is a leading figure in Christianity and a passionate advocate of the universality of Jesus’ teachings. For this reason, he is called the Apostle to the Nations. He embraced Christianity after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Before becoming a Christian, he was known as Saul. In his homeland, he learned the Greek language and the art of tent-making. He was a fervent persecutor of Christ and Christians and took part in the stoning of the First Martyr, Stephen. He was later recognized as an equal-to-the-Apostles and a saint when he was called by the Lord Himself, through divine intervention, and transformed into a zealous preacher of the Gospel. He made many missionary journeys to spread God’s word. He founded the church in Philippi (Kavala) and preached the Gospel throughout Greece. He wrote 14 epistles, in which he teaches the proper behavior of Christians according to the Gospel.
