Description

Icon of Saint Paisios the Athonite on Naturally Aged Wood

An exquisite icon of Saint Paisios the Athonite (July 25, 1924 – July 12, 1994), who became widely known for his life and work.

Arsenios Eznepidis, as his worldly name was, was born in Farasa, Cappadocia. On August 7, 1924, one week before they left for Greece as part of the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, he was baptized by the priest of his parish, also named Arsenios, who was later recognized as a saint by the Orthodox Church in 1988.

The canonization of Saint Paisios by the Orthodox Church took place on January 13, 2015, by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, and his feast day is celebrated on July 12. In 2017, he was proclaimed the patron saint of the Military Signals Corps by a decision of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece. In his last years, he lived at the Panagouda cell on Mount Athos, where he was visited by many people seeking his guidance and blessings. He led a very ascetic life, resting only 2 to 3 hours a day. After his death, he was buried at the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Theologian in Souroti, Thessaloniki.

This is a beautiful icon of Saint Paisios the Athonite, painted on naturally aged wood. The composition respects and faithfully represents the Byzantine tradition of Mount Athos. The wood’s grain, cracks, knots, and protrusions not only signify its age but also the daily use of the wood, which was once part of a monastic cell on Mount Athos that was restored.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be small variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
