Description
Serigraph with the Virgin Mary “Brefokratousa” on Naturally Aged Wood
A collectible image depicting the Virgin Mary as the “Brefokratousa” (the “Mother holding the Child”) on canvas, which is then mounted on naturally aged wood.
In this representation, the Virgin Mary holds the infant Jesus in her arms, surrounded by Saints. The wood features cracks and a textured, raised surface, which add to the charm and Byzantine aesthetic of the icon.
The name “Brefokratousa” refers to the care and tenderness the Theotokos (Mother of God) shows towards the baby Jesus, whom she holds in her embrace. It is one of many epithets given to the Virgin Mary, derived from either the way she is depicted in icons, such as in this particular “Brefokratousa” image, from the locations of churches dedicated to her name, or from hymns and traditions.
This unique image is crafted on naturally aged wood, which comes from Mount Athos, specifically from a monastic cell that required restoration due to damage over time. Each piece of wood was carefully worked and restored by monks with exceptional woodworking skills, and it ultimately became the foundation for this image.
Note: Since the image is handcrafted and the wood is processed by hand, slight variations may occur in the wood, but this does not affect the depiction.
