Description

Antiqued Lithograph of the Virgin of Leros

The original miraculous icon of the Virgin is kept in the church of the Virgin of the Medieval Castle in Leros.

One day in 1522, the Turkish soldiers of the Castle saw a boat sailing alone in the distance. When the boat approached the harbor, they saw the icon of the Virgin inside, with two lamps burning on either side of her. They then called the priests of the island, who went to the harbor with many residents and brought the icon to the Metropolitan Church of Leros.

At the location of the present-day church of the Virgin in the Castle, there were Turkish gunpowder warehouses at that time. One morning, the Turkish soldiers were astonished to see the icon they had given to the priests and placed in the cathedral on a barrel, with two lamps burning on either side. The commander was angry, assuming that the soldiers had been bribed by the priests, and sent the icon back to the cathedral. However, this happened 3-4 times, and the Turkish commander, furious, took the keys from the soldiers, chained the door of the warehouse, locked it, and took the keys himself.

The next morning, however, when he himself opened the door to the warehouse, he was amazed to see the icon on the barrel with the lamps still burning. He exclaimed: “Miracle!!” After this, he gave permission for the church to be built to house the icon of the Virgin of the Castle.
According to another tradition, the icon arrived in the island of Leros in the same way during the period of iconoclasm.

Antiqued Lithograph: Characteristics

This particular image was created using the lithography technique, which is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is also used by several monks to create exceptional works of art. In this case, the monk used a lithographed copy of Byzantine art and completed this work following the traditional method of artificial aging. The lithography technique in iconography is essentially a printing technique.
