A lithograph depicting Our Lady of Sorrows. In the features of her face, one can see the bitterness, sadness, and sorrow—the negative emotions she experienced from the martyrdom and Crucifixion of her only son. All the grief for an event that was predestined to save humanity, an event she could do nothing but watch unfold.

On the face of the Virgin, etched is the unspeakable sorrow of a mother who has lost her only child, and even more so, the sorrow of a mother who saw her innocent child suffer. For this reason, the Virgin Mary is one of the most beloved figures in Orthodoxy, not only because of her pure life but also because she was a mother. A mother to her only son, but also a mother to the whole world who turns to her.

Lithograph: Features

This image of the Sorrowful Virgin has been created using the lithographic technique. This technique is taught at the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is used by several monks to create exceptional works of art. In this case, the monk-artist used a lithographed copy of Byzantine art and crafted this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, creating a wonderful piece with unique aesthetic value.
