A wonderful depiction in antiqued lithograph of the Sad Virgin. In the features of her face, one can see the bitterness, sorrow, and grief, all the negative emotions she experienced from the martyrdom and Crucifixion of her only son. All the sadness for an event that was predestined to save humanity, which she could only watch.

On the face of the Theotokos, the unspeakable sorrow of a mother who has lost her only child is engraved, and even more so, the sorrow of a mother who saw her innocent child being tortured. This is why the Theotokos is one of the most beloved figures in Orthodoxy, not only because of her holy life but also because she was the Mother. A mother for her only son, but also a mother for the whole world that turns to her.

Antiqued Lithograph: Characteristics

This particular image was created using the lithography technique, which is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is also used by several monks to create exceptional works of art. In this case, the monk used a lithographed copy of Byzantine art and completed the work following the traditional method of artificial aging. The lithography technique in iconography is essentially a printing technique.
