The miraculous icon of Panagia Prousiotissa is the work of Luke the Evangelist. During the period of iconoclasm (829-842 AD) the emperor Theophilus ordered the icons. To protect the icon, a young nobleman tried to smuggle the icon from Bursa in Asia Minor to Greece. But on the way to Greece, at Gallipoli in Thrace, the icon disappeared and appeared miraculously with a torch-like column of light to a shepherd in Evritania.

When the young man heard about the appearance of the icon, he wanted to take it. However, the icon disappeared again from his hands and appeared to shepherds in Evritania on the night of August 22-23, where it is still located today in the Holy Monastery of Panagia Prousiotissa.

The icon is honored on August 23rd, the day of the rendering of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and at the same time the day of finding the miraculous icon.

Sandblasted Gold Printing: Features

In the icon with the representation of Panagia Prousiotissa, the hagiographer monk used the technique of gold printing creating a work of unique beauty. Gold-stamping is a kind of hot-stamping technique. Hot-stamping is the method by which very thin metal gold sheet is placed on surfaces such as wood, leather, cardboard, plastic by pressing a heated embossed plate (plate) on our surface. Around the image you also use the technique of sandblasting, it is the technical treatment that achieves the corrosion of part or all of a surface by pouring sand under pressure.
