Description
Serigraph of the Platytera ton Ouranon on Naturally Aged Wood
The Panagia as Platytera ton Ouranon is depicted in the upper interior part of the central apse (sanctuary) of Orthodox Church temples. The Panagia is usually shown with her arms open, holding the Christ Child in her embrace.
The title “Platytera ton Ouranon” comes from the characteristic verse of the Akathist Hymn, “Rejoice, shelter of the world, wider than the heavens.”
The epithets of the Panagia are estimated to exceed 500 and originate either from the miracles attributed to her, hymns, regions where churches and monasteries have been built in her name, or the way she is depicted in icons.
The Athonite monk used naturally aged wood for this particular icon. It is a unique piece of wood that resulted from renovation work on an Athonite cell, which had suffered damage due to the passage of time. The monks kept the wood, which was replaced with new materials, and after restoration, it was used as a base for icons.
Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
The icon is available upon request.
