In this image, which has been crafted on naturally aged wood, the Virgin Platytera ton Ouranon is depicted with open arms, embracing all people as her children.

This particular image of the Virgin is unique, as the wood used comes from the renovation of an Athonite cell.

The Virgin as Platytera ton Ouranon is depicted in the upper part of the central apse (Sanctuary) of Orthodox Church altars. The Virgin is shown either seated on a throne, holding the Christ Child in her arms, or standing with her arms outstretched and slightly raised.

The name Platytera ton Ouranon comes from the well-known verse of the Akathist Hymn: “Hail, O Shelter of the World, wider than the heavens.”

The naturally aged wood used in this beautiful icon comes from Mount Athos. It is wood that was replaced due to wear after renovation work in an Athonite cell. The monks kept it, and after necessary restoration, it was used as the base for this particular icon. The cracks in the wood testify to its long history, having been used by monks for many years before it was replaced. Even then, the monks found another purpose for it, turning it into an icon.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
