Icon of the Virgin Platytera of the Heavens on Naturally Aged Wood
This icon, which has been created on naturally aged wood, depicts the Virgin Platytera of the Heavens.
She is shown enthroned, with two Angels on either side of her, as she embraces all people as her children. This particular image of the Virgin is unique, as the wood used comes from the renovation of a monastic cell on Mount Athos.
The Virgin, as Platytera of the Heavens, is traditionally depicted in the upper central part of the sanctuary (Holy Altar) of Orthodox Churches. Sometimes she is shown seated on a throne, holding the Christ Child in her arms, and at other times, standing with her arms outstretched and slightly raised. The name Platytera of the Heavens comes from the iconic hymn verse of the Akathist, “Rejoice, O Shelter of the World, wider than the clouds.”
The entire composition respects the age of the wood and faithfully conveys the Byzantine tradition of Mount Athos. Each icon maintains its unique character due to the specific wood used for its creation.
Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be small variations in the wood, but not in the depiction itself.
The icon is available upon order.
