Description

Icon of the Platytera of the Heavens on Naturally Aged Wood

The Virgin Mary as the Platytera of the Heavens is depicted in the upper inner part of the central apse of the Holy Altar (Sanctuary) in the churches of the Orthodox Church. The Virgin is usually shown seated on a throne, holding the infant Jesus Christ in her arms. However, she is also often depicted standing, with her arms extended and slightly raised.

The name “Platytera of the Heavens” comes from the famous verse of the Akathist Hymn: “Rejoice, O shelter of the world, more spacious than the heavens.”

The monks of Mount Athos, who deeply venerate the historical and spiritual significance of the place in which they live and practice, strive to use everything around them for the glory of God. Thus, the wood found in disuse after the renovation of old cells was utilized through the wisdom of the monks and transformed into beautiful icons. In this way, they continue to live and pass on the blessing of Mount Athos.

Through “The Athonite Heritage,” these collectible icons can be found in the hands of those who long to hold a piece of the living Athonite tradition.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be small variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
