Aged silkscreen printing with Our Lady of the Dawn Gate

A wonderful silkscreen, with a rare icon of the Virgin Mary, which bears the name Gate of the Dawn, from the location in which it is located. The original icon is located in Vilnius, Lithuania and specifically at the Dawn Gate (one of the nine gates that formerly existed in the city) and is one of the most important religious exhibits in the country. Specifically, in the Chapel, located at the Gate of Dawn there is an icon of Our Lady of the Mother of Mercy (or Our Lady of the Gate of the Dawn) known for its miracles. For centuries the icon has been one of the symbols of the city and an object of prayer for both Roman Catholics and Orthodox. This is the figure of the Virgin Mary, who bears a crown on her head, while not holding Jesus in her arms.

Screen printing: Features

Screen printing is a very widespread technique in hagiography, so it is taught and used in many hagiography workshops, including those of Mount Athos. In fact, in the hagiographies created with this technique, the monks use traditional methods, which means that the hagiographer creates a large part of the hagiography by hand and with much less involvement of technology. The artificial aging of the hagiographies is also handmade, giving these works collector’s value. These are exact copies of Byzantine art, in which the charm of the old is strong. The hagiography has been crafted with excellent quality materials in natural wood, while the painted surface is covered with pure beeswax, in order to keep it intact and with bright colors.
