Description

Weathered Lithograph of Panagia Odigitria

An exact replica of the original image, crafted on natural spruce wood.

The icon depicting Panagia Odigitria is historically regarded as the first image of the Church. It was painted by the Evangelist Luke himself.

According to tradition, the Evangelist Luke painted the icon of the Theotokos while she was still alive. In fact, the Virgin Mary received it with great joy and blessed it, saying, “May the grace of the One born of me be with her.”

The icon of Panagia Odigitria was preserved in Palestine. During the reign of Emperor Theodosius II, it was sent to Constantinople by Empress Eudocia as a gift to Theodosius’ sister, Saint Pulcheria. Saint Pulcheria placed it in the monastery she had built, the Holy Monastery of the Guides.

A replica of this historic icon is housed in the Holy Monastery of Xenofontos on Mount Athos.

Lithograph – Features

The technique of lithography is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is also used by several monks to create exceptional works of art. In this case, the iconographer monk used a lithographed replica of Byzantine art and created this piece following the traditional method of handmade aging. The result is a beautiful work with unique aesthetic value. The wood has been treated with the appropriate materials to ensure the durability of the colors over time.
