Description

Antiqued Lithograph of the Virgin Megalochari

An exact replica of the original image crafted on natural fir wood. A beautiful antiqued lithograph depicting the Virgin Megalochari. According to Christian tradition, the Virgin Mary was given the epithet Megalochari due to the great grace bestowed upon her by the Lord, enabling her to hear the archangel’s greeting: “Rejoice, O Full of Grace, the Lord is with You.” The most famous image of the Virgin Megalochari is the one from Tinos. According to religious tradition, the Church of the Virgin of Tinos was built at the spot where an icon of the Theotokos was found after visions experienced by a nun.

This nun, Pelagia from the Monastery of Kechrovouni, had a vision in 1822 in which the Virgin Mary urged her to find a miraculous image of Her. It is said that she had the same dream for three consecutive Sundays before excavations began, which initially proved unsuccessful. However, the image was eventually found in late January of 1823. The discovery, following the nun’s vision, was considered a great miracle, which became inextricably linked to the Greek Revolution.

In this case, the iconographer monk used a lithographed copy of Byzantine art and created this piece following the traditional method of handmade aging.
