An exact replica of the original icon, painted on canvas. A beautiful icon depicting the Virgin Mary, known as Panagia Megalochari. According to Christian tradition, the Virgin received the epithet Megalochari due to the Great Grace she received from the Lord to hear the archangelic greeting “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you.” The most famous Virgin Mary with the title Megalochari is the one from Tinos. According to religious tradition, the church of Panagia in Tinos was built at the spot where an icon of the Theotokos was found after visions experienced by a nun.

This was the nun Pelagia from the Holy Monastery of Kechrovouni, who in 1822 had a vision of the Virgin Mary urging her to find a miraculous icon of Her. It is said that she had the same dream three Sundays before excavation work began, which initially proved fruitless. The icon was actually discovered much later, in late January of 1823. In fact, the discovery of the icon after the nun’s vision was considered a great miracle, which inevitably became connected to the Greek War of Independence.

Canvas Icon – Features

In the technique of printing on canvas, the iconographer monk used a replica of a Byzantine icon and embellished the work with embossed elements. The construction of the icon is done entirely by hand, using an aging technique. The canvas is treated with plaster so that the colors of the icon remain unchanged over time.
