In the face of the Most Holy Theotokos, all virtues are gathered. The Virgin Mary is all-pure and all-virtuous. Throughout the centuries, the virtues, gifts, and countless miracles of the Virgin Mary have inspired iconographers, who create distinct images of her form, filled with symbolism.

The title “Kecharitomene” was given to the Virgin by Archangel Gabriel during the Annunciation. “Rejoice, Kecharitomene, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women,” the archangel said to Mary when he visited her to announce the saving news that she would bring the Messiah into the world.

“Kecharitomene” means filled with God’s Grace, full of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Virgin Mary is “Kecharitomene” because she possessed the full measure of God’s Grace.

In the image of the Virgin Mary as Kecharitomene, the Theotokos is depicted lovingly holding her Son in her arms. The faces of the two figures touch, and the young Jesus touches his mother’s face with one hand, as all children do in their mother’s embrace, seeking warmth and security.

Canvas Painting – Features

Using the technique of printing on canvas, the iconographer monk employed a copy of a Byzantine icon and created the work with embossed elements. The construction of the image is entirely hand-crafted with an antiquing technique. The canvas is treated with putty to ensure the image’s colors remain unchanged over time.
