The most revered figure in Orthodoxy, after the three persons of the Holy Trinity, is that of the Holy Theotokos, the Mother of God. Her beloved image is crystallized in our iconographic tradition, showcasing all the qualities and titles of the Virgin. One particularly beloved depiction is the Virgin of Jerusalem.

In this iconic image, the face of the Virgin is depicted serene and dignified, embodying a rare nobility that emanates from the simplicity of her form. Her features are delicate and harmonious, with large, almond-shaped eyes, a fine straight nose, and a small, composed mouth. Her hair is not visible at all. The entire form of the Virgin is filled with symbolic and doctrinal teachings. Her large eyes gaze directly into the heart of the viewer, the delicate nose symbolizes true nobility, and freedom from worldly corruption. Her beauty is timeless, as it is based not on outward physical traits, but on the spiritual wealth and virtues of the Theotokos.

In this particular image, the iconographer monk used lithography to create a work of unique beauty, adorned with gold leaf along the borders. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk followed the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos. The artificial aging of the icon is handcrafted, a process that is given particular importance by the monks of Mount Athos.
