Description

Lithograph of Our Lady of Gorgoepikoos

A beautiful lithograph depicting the representation of Our Lady of Gorgoepikoos. As is well known, the miraculous icon of Our Lady of Gorgoepikoos has been kept at the Holy Monastery of Dochiariou on Mount Athos since 1646. It was named so after a miracle. According to tradition, one of the monks passed by the icon of the Virgin Mary carrying lit torches, which caused the icon to darken. A voice then called out to him, asking him to stop.

The monk ignored the voice and continued, and soon after, he lost his sight. Realizing that the voice was that of the Virgin Mary, he begged her to have mercy on him. The Theotokos, as a compassionate mother, heard his prayer and restored his sight, saying: “I am the Lady of this Monastery, and I swiftly obey those who call upon me, granting them what they ask for their salvation.”
