Description

Lithograph with the Panagia Gorgoëpikoos
A stunning lithograph depicting the Panagia Gorgoëpikoos. As is well known, the miraculous icon of the Panagia Gorgoëpikoos has been kept at the Monastery of Docheiariou on Mount Athos since 1646. The icon received its name after a miracle. According to tradition, one of the monks was passing by the icon holding burning torches, causing it to become blackened. Suddenly, a voice was heard asking him to stop.

The monk ignored the voice and continued, only to lose his sight shortly after. Realizing that the voice he had heard was that of the Theotokos, he begged her for mercy. As a compassionate mother, the Virgin listened to his prayer and restored his sight, saying: “I am the Lady of this Monastery and quickly obey those who call upon me, granting them the petitions for their salvation.”

Lithograph: Features
Using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk iconographer created this piece following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught at Mount Athos. The artificial aging process of the icon is handcrafted, which gives the work, depicting the Panagia, a collectible value. The lithography technique used in iconography is a printing method that was invented in 1798.
