Description

Silk print with Panagia Glykofilousa on Natural Aging Wood

A wonderful icon, created entirely by hand, with the Virgin Glykophiloussa, who is depicted lovingly holding the baby Christ in her arms.

According to tradition, Panagia Glykofilousa was rescued from iconoclasm and transferred to Athos. It is said to have belonged to Victoria, the wife of a senator, who in her attempt to save the icon threw it into the sea.

Tradition says that the icon floated upright in the waves until it finally arrived at the arsenal of the Philotheou Monastery, where it was spotted and received by the monastery’s fathers. On Easter Monday, the litany of the icon takes place from the Holy Monastery to the place where it was found.

It is worth mentioning that the nickname Glykofilousa is one of the approximately 500 names attributed to the Virgin Mary, who is one of the most beloved figures of the Orthodox Church.

This particular icon has a double value, not only because it represents the most beloved holy figure of Christianity, the Virgin Mary, but also because its naturally aged wood comes from a restored cell from the Virgin’s Garden itself. An irrefutable witness of the age of the wood are the cracks that run through its surface and testify that it is a piece that has been used by the monks of Athos during their daily life in the Athonian State. A wonderful image, which is a collector’s piece, as it is created on a piece of wood, which “comes back to life” in the hands of the monks.

As the image is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the illustration.

Image is available upon request.
