Description
Icon on canvas of the Virgin Mary Glykofilousa.
Icon on canvas depicting the Virgin Mary Glykofilousa, lovingly holding the Infant Christ in her arms. According to tradition, the original icon of the Virgin Glykofilousa was preserved during the period of iconoclasm and was later transferred to Mount Athos. It is said to have belonged to Victoria, the wife of a senator, who, in her attempt to save the icon, threw it into the sea.
Tradition says that the icon floated upright on the waves until it finally reached the harbor of the Holy Monastery of Philotheou, where it was discovered and taken in by the monks of the monastery. On the Monday of Pascha, a procession of the icon takes place from the Holy Monastery to the spot where it was found. It is worth noting that the epithet “Glykofilousa” is one of about 500 titles attributed to the Virgin Mary, who is one of the most beloved figures in the Orthodox Church.
A beautiful icon where the depiction is on canvas. It is handmade with an aged technique and embossed decor, elements that make it unique.
