Description

Picture on canvas with Panagia Glykofilousa

Image on canvas with the representation of Panagia Glykofilousa, who

is depicted lovingly holding the little Christ in her arms. According to tradition, the original icon of Panagia Glykofilousa survived during the iconoclasm and was transferred to Athos. It allegedly belonged to Victoria, wife of a senator, who threw it into the sea in an attempt to save the icon.

Tradition says that the icon

floated upright in the waves until it finally reached the arsana of the Philotheou Monastery, where it was located and received by the monastery’s fathers. On Easter Monday the litany of the icon takes place from the Holy Monastery to the place where it was found. It is worth mentioning that the nickname Glykofilousa is one of the approximately 500 names attributed to the Virgin Mary, who is one of the most beloved figures of the Orthodox Church.
