Description

Iconography on a natural piece of wood by the monks of Mount Athos

An exquisite icon depicting Saint Hypomone.

This particular icon has been crafted based on Byzantine standards of iconography. The depiction of the saint is painted entirely by hand. The coating of the icon with pure beeswax ensures that the colors remain unchanged over time.

Helen Dragas-Palaeologus, also known as Saint Hypomone (Serbian: Јелена Драгаш, Elena Dragas, circa 1372 – March 13 or 23, 1450), was the daughter of Serbian despot Konstantin Dragas Dejanovic (Greek: Κωνσταντίνος Δραγάσης), the wife of Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus, and the mother of the last two Byzantine emperors, John VIII and Constantine XI. She served as regent after the death of her son John VIII in 1448 until 1449. She is venerated as a saint by the Orthodox Church, under her monastic name Hypomone.

As the icon is handmade and the processing of the wood is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
