An exquisite icon depicting the Virgin Mary of Sweet Kiss.

This particular icon has been created based on Byzantine iconographic standards. The depiction of the Saint has been painted exclusively by hand. The coating of the icon with pure beeswax ensures that the colors of the image remain unchanged over time.

The original image of Sweet Kiss is one of those icons that were preserved during the iconoclasm and were miraculously transported to Athos. It belonged to Victoria, the devout wife of the iconoclast senator Simeon, who, to prevent its capture, threw it into the sea. The icon, floating upright on the waves, reached the harbor of the Monastery of Philotheou, where it was received with great honor and joy by the abbot and the fathers of the Monastery, who had been informed through a revelation from the Theotokos. At the point on the shore where the icon was deposited, a holy spring burst forth. There, every year on the Monday of Bright Week, a procession and blessing take place.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be small variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
