Description

Serigraph of Panagia Glykofilousa on Naturally Aged Wood

A beautiful hand-crafted image of Panagia Glykofilousa, depicted lovingly holding the infant Christ in her arms.

According to tradition, the Panagia Glykofilousa icon was saved from the iconoclasts and brought to Mount Athos. It is believed to have belonged to Victoria, the wife of a senator, who, in her attempt to save the icon, threw it into the sea.

Tradition says that the icon floated upright in the waves until it eventually reached the pier of the Monastery of Filotheou, where it was found and received by the monks. Every Easter Monday, the icon is carried in a procession from the Monastery to the location where it was found.

It is worth noting that the title “Glykofilousa” (Sweet-Kissing) is one of approximately 500 names attributed to the Virgin Mary, who is one of the most beloved figures in the Orthodox Church.

This particular icon holds double value, not only because it represents the most beloved sacred figure in Christianity, the Virgin Mary, but also because the naturally aged wood it is mounted on comes from a renovated cell in the Holy Mountain itself. The cracks in the wood bear witness to its age and tell the story of its use by the monks in their daily lives in the Athonite monastic community. A wonderful image that is both a work of art and a collectible piece, as it is created on a piece of wood that “comes back to life” in the hands of the monks.

As the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, small variations may exist in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
