Description

Weathered Lithograph of Panagia Glykophilousa

An exact replica of the original icon, crafted on natural fir wood.

The original icon of Glykophilousa is one of those saved during the Iconoclasm and miraculously transported to Mount Athos. It belonged to Victoria, the devout wife of the iconoclast senator Simeon, who, unwilling to surrender it, cast it into the sea. The icon, standing upright on the waves, reached the harbor of the Philotheou Monastery, where it was received with great honor and joy by the abbot and the fathers of the monastery, who had been forewarned by a revelation of the Theotokos. At the spot on the shore where the icon was placed, a spring of holy water emerged. Every year on Bright Monday, a procession and a blessing ceremony take place at this location.

Lithograph – Features

The art of lithography is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is widely used by monks to create exceptional works of art. In this case, the monk-iconographer utilized a lithographic replica of Byzantine art and crafted this piece using the traditional method of manual aging. This process resulted in a remarkable artwork with unique aesthetic value. The wood has been treated with appropriate materials to ensure the durability of the colors over time.
