Description

Lithograph of the Panagia Glykofilousa

A beautiful image of the Panagia Glykofilousa, depicted lovingly holding the infant Christ in her arms. According to tradition, the original icon of the Panagia Glykofilousa was preserved during the period of iconoclasm and was brought to Mount Athos. It is said to have belonged to Victoria, the wife of a senator, who, in her attempt to save the icon, threw it into the sea. Tradition tells that the icon floated upright on the waves until it finally reached the harbor of the Monastery of Philotheou, where it was discovered and retrieved by the monks. On Easter Monday, a procession of the icon is held from the Holy Monastery to the spot where it was found. It is worth noting that the title “Glykofilousa” is one of approximately 500 names attributed to the Virgin Mary, who is one of the most beloved figures in the Orthodox Church.
