A marvelous silkscreen depicting the Virgin Mary Glykophilousa, her almond-shaped eyes gazing into the distance, seemingly foreseeing the trials and suffering her Son will endure. She tenderly cradles her only Son in her arms, highlighting her human side. Her head inclines, her face touching that of her beloved Son. The intimate embrace of the two figures conveys an outward sign of the sorrow and mourning the Virgin experienced during her Son’s Crucifixion.

The icon simultaneously reflects the Virgin Mary’s deep love for her Son from a purely human perspective. She is surrounded by a sculpted halo, as is the young Jesus in her arms. The cracks in the wood reveal its long and fascinating history.
