Aged Serigraph of the Virgin of the Sweetness of the Angels

An exquisite aged serigraph created on natural fir wood. The Sweetness of the Angels is a hymn to the Most Holy Theotokos, to whom the entire Athonite State is dedicated. “The Sweetness of the Angels, the joy of the sorrowful,” is specifically referenced in one of the hymns of the Dormition. The Sweetness of the Angels refers to the Virgin Mary, who brings joy, delight, and fulfillment because she bore Jesus Christ into the world. In this icon, the Virgin embraces Christ, while two angelic figures are seen above. The representation of the Most Holy Theotokos is one of the beloved themes of the monks of Mount Athos, who, in this way, express their boundless faith and love.

Serigraph – Characteristics

The serigraph is a particularly widespread technique in iconography, and it is taught and used in many iconography workshops, including those of Mount Athos. In fact, in the icons created using this technique, the monks employ traditional methods, meaning the iconographer paints much of the icon by hand with minimal involvement of technology. The technique of aging icons is also handmade, giving these works a collectible value. These are precise copies of Byzantine art, with a strong charm of the old. The icon is painted with materials of exceptional quality on natural wood, and the painted surface is coated with pure beeswax to ensure the colors of the icon remain intact over time.
