Description

Silkscreen Print of the Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows on Naturally Aged Wood

An exquisite silkscreen print on naturally aged wood featuring the relatively rare depiction of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, also known as the Our Lady of the Seven Dolors.

In this particular iconography, she is depicted with three swords on each shoulder and a seventh sword piercing her heart from below. However, there are also representations with three swords on one side and four on the other.

According to Christian tradition, the seven swords that seem to pierce the body of the Virgin symbolize the sorrows she experienced throughout her life, culminating in the Crucifixion of her only Son. In the Bible, the number seven usually signifies completeness and abundance, but in this case, it symbolizes the immense sorrow of the Theotokos.

A Russian tradition mentions that icons with this depiction are often placed at the entrance of a home to protect it from envy, the evil eye, and illness.

This particular icon of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, like all icons in this category, has been crafted on naturally aged wood, which originates from a cell at Mount Athos. Through the “Athonite Heritage,” these collectible icons can be found in the hands of those who long to hold a piece of the living Athonite tradition.

As the image is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The image is available upon order.
