Description

Lithograph of the Panagia Eleftherotria

The Panagia Eleftherotria is named so because, during the Byzantine Empire, she was recognized as the “Supreme Commander” or “Victory Leader.” It was established that her feast day would be celebrated on October 1st, but in Greece, it was later moved to October 28th to coincide with the national holiday. The Virgin Mary is the Liberator, not only from visible enemies—those who centuries ago tried to enslave the country—but also from internal enemies, from passions and temptations. She liberated us from these, which is why she is celebrated and called Eleftherotria. She is the Liberator of souls, bodies, and the homeland. She is the Liberator from everything that concerns us, troubles us, and causes us pain.
