A stunning serigraph of Our Lady of Tenderness.

The original icon of the “Eleousa” was discovered thanks to the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to an eight-year-old boy, Athanasios Syros, in the Thessaly region in 1954. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared twice to the young boy, but both his parents and the villagers did not believe his claims. In 1962, when an excavating machine came to the village of Xyniada to build roads, the icon of the Virgin Mary was found buried at the root of a buckthorn tree, exactly where the young boy had pointed out years before. When the villagers saw the icon, they sought forgiveness, not only from the now grown boy but also from the Virgin Mary herself. It is believed that the icon dates back to the period of Iconoclasm and was buried to protect it from destruction.

The exceptional quality and aesthetic superiority of this icon come not only from the remarkable craftsmanship of the artist but also from the naturally aged wood used as the base for this beautiful work of art.
