Description

Icon of the Virgin Eleousa on Naturally Aged Wood

A beautiful icon of the Virgin Eleousa on naturally aged wood, showcasing the impressive craftsmanship of the monks of Mount Athos.

The original image of Eleousa was discovered thanks to apparitions of the Virgin Mary to an eight-year-old boy, Athanasios Syros, in the Thessaly region in 1954. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared to the young boy twice, but neither his parents nor the villagers believed anything he claimed to have seen. In 1962, when an excavator came to the village of Xyniada to open roads, the image of the Virgin was found buried at the root of an arbutus tree, exactly where the 8-year-old boy had pointed out years earlier. When the villagers saw the icon, they sought forgiveness from both the boy, who had since grown up, and, most importantly, from the Virgin herself. It is believed that the icon dates back to the period of iconoclasm and was buried to save it from destruction.

The naturally aged wood used for this icon of the Virgin comes from Mount Athos. It is wood that has been imbued with the prayers of the monks, which had been heard continuously for years in the particular cell from which it originates.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
