The Immaculate Virgin Mary in Orthodox iconography is also known as the Virgin of the Passion, as Christ gazes at the two Angels depicted beside the Virgin, holding the symbols of the Passion in their hands—the Cross, the Spear, and the Sponge. In the face of Christ, one can discern His frightened gaze, which can be explained by the fact that what He sees before Him is His Passion and the Crucifixion Sacrifice.

The name of the icon comes from the hymn of the Apodeipnon: “Immaculate, Pure, Unstained…” composed by the monk Paul.

Lithograph – Characteristics

The lithography technique is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is simultaneously used by many monks to create exceptional works of art. In this particular case, the iconographer monk used a lithographed copy of Byzantine art and created this piece following the traditional handmade aging method. The result is a beautiful work of art with unique aesthetic value. The wood has been treated with suitable materials to ensure great color durability over time.
