Description

Aged Serigraph of the Virgin Amolyntos

An exquisite aged serigraph crafted on natural fir wood.

The Virgin Amolyntos in Orthodox iconography is also known as the Virgin of the Passion because Christ gazes at the two Angels depicted on either side of the Virgin, holding the symbols of the Passion—namely, the Cross, the Spear, and the Sponge. In Christ’s face, one can discern a fearful expression, which is explained by the fact that what He sees before Him are His Passion and His Crucifixion.

The name of this icon originates from the hymn of the Small Compline, “Spotless, Immaculate, and Unstained…” composed by Monk Paul.

Serigraph – Characteristics

Serigraphy is a particularly widespread technique in iconography, and as such, it is taught and used in many iconography workshops, including those of Mount Athos. In the iconographies created with this technique, the monks use traditional methods, meaning the iconographer handcrafts a large portion of the icon with very little involvement of technology. The aging technique used for the icons is also handmade, giving these works collectible value. These are precise copies of Byzantine art, with a strong allure of antiquity. The icon has been crafted with exceptional quality materials on natural wood, and the painted surface is covered with pure beeswax to ensure the colors of the icon remain unchanged over time.
