Immaculate Virgin on Naturally Aged Wood

The Immaculate Virgin is placed on naturally aged wood, sourced from a renovated cell of Mount Athos. The wood bears cracks, which testify to the years it spent in the cell, being used by the Athonite monks.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

Description

Image of the Immaculate Virgin on Naturally Aged Wood

The Immaculate Virgin in this image holds Christ to her left, with her hand protectively underneath His body. A beautiful image on naturally aged wood from an Athonite monastery cell. The monk who created this icon gave special attention to the haloes that frame the two figures.

The Immaculate Virgin in Orthodox iconography is also known as the Virgin of the Passion because Christ gazes at the two angels depicted on either side of the Virgin, holding the symbols of the Passion: the Cross, the Spear, and the Sponge. The name of the icon comes from the hymn of the Apodosis (the liturgical prayer): “Immaculate, Pure, and Unstained…” composed by Monk Paul.

The Athonite monks strive to make use of everything around them. Even the worn-out materials that seem to have no use or are old, in their hands, acquire a new form. Thus, the woods found in disuse after the renovation of old cells were repurposed thanks to the monks’ wisdom and transformed into unique icons. They continue to live and carry the blessings of Mount Athos.

Through “Athonite Heritage,” these collectible icons can be found in the hands of those who long to hold a piece of the living Athonite tradition.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon order.
