Description
Iconography on a natural wood panel, crafted by the monks of Mount Athos
An exquisite icon depicting the Holy Trinity.
This particular icon has been created based on Byzantine iconographic traditions. The depiction of the Saint has been painted entirely by hand. The application of pure beeswax over the icon ensures that the colors of the image remain unchanged over time.
In this formulation of the Nicene Creed, the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Son as well. However, in Orthodox doctrine, the only cause for the existence of both the Son and the Holy Spirit is the Person of God the Father.
In Byzantine iconography, the Father is not depicted but is typically represented by the Son for two reasons: First, because the Father did not take on flesh as the Son did through His Incarnation, and thus no one has seen God the Father. Second, because each Person of the Holy Trinity is fully God. An exception to this rule is the depiction of God the Father as the “Ancient of Days.” This title is taken from the prophetic book of Daniel (7:9) and signifies the eternity of God.
