Description

Silkscreen Print of the Annunciation of the Theotokos on Naturally Aged Wood

A representation of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in silkscreen print on naturally aged wood (March 25).

The feast of the Annunciation of the Theotokos is a Theophytotic feast. This means it is a Theophytotic feast because it refers to the Lord Christ, who was conceived in the womb of the Theotokos, and a Theotokotic feast because it refers to the person who contributed to the conception and incarnation of the Word of God, the Virgin Mary. It is one of the most significant feasts in Orthodoxy as it marks the beginning of salvation for mankind.

The Annunciation of the Theotokos is essentially the joyful news that the Virgin Mary received from the Archangel Gabriel that she would bring Jesus Christ into the world in a miraculous way. According to the Evangelist Luke, the event of the Annunciation took place in Nazareth. Sent by God, the Archangel Gabriel meets Mary at her home and greets her saying, “Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you.” When the Archangel announces to her that she will conceive, Mary is initially puzzled and asks how this will happen, since she has no husband. The Archangel then reassures her that the Holy Spirit will take care of everything. Mary’s response, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be unto me according to your word,” shows her complete submission and trust in God’s will.

The story of this particular image begins even before the monk completes the representation on the canvas. It is a beautiful work of art, as even the wood of the base is a piece of Mount Athos, coming from a restored Athonite cell.

Now, the naturally aged wood continues its “life” as an icon, created with passion and the incredible skills of the monks, while also carrying with it a small piece of the history of the Athonite State.

Since the image is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The image is available upon order.
