Icon of the Crucifixion on Naturally Aged Wood

In this unique icon of the Crucifixion of the Lord, the central focus is the cross of Christ. The Cross consists of a vertical beam and three horizontal ones: the large one where His hands were nailed, a smaller one as a footrest, and one above His head, which bears the inscription stating the reason for His condemnation.

To the right of the Cross, the Virgin Mary is depicted along with three women who accompany her. They are known from the Gospels as the “Three Marys”: Mary Magdalene, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Salome, who is identified as the mother of the sons of Zebedee. The two women embrace the Virgin Mary, comforting her and sharing in the Divine Passion.
