Gold Stamping with Sandblasting: Features

In the icon depicting Jesus Christ the Pantocrator, the monk-iconographer used the technique of gold stamping to create a uniquely beautiful piece. Gold stamping is a type of hot foil stamping. Hot foil stamping is a method by which a very thin metallic foil is bonded to surfaces such as wood, leather, cardboard, or plastic through the pressure of a heated engraved plate (die) pressed onto the surface. Around the border of the icon, the technique of sandblasting is also used—a process that erodes part or all of a surface by blasting it with sand under pressure.
