Icon of Christ Pantocrator on Naturally Aged Wood
A beautiful icon featuring the representation of Christ Pantocrator, surrounded by the four Evangelists.
The very word “Pantocrator” means “the Almighty” or “the ruler of all,” the one who holds all authority. The image of Christ Pantocrator is typically depicted on the central dome (or cupola) of Byzantine churches, and in churches without domes, in the center of the ceiling. This specific depiction of Christ is one of the traditional themes in Byzantine and post-Byzantine art.
Around the figure of Jesus, we see the four Evangelists, but they are represented by their symbols: Matthew as an angel, Mark as a lion, Luke as an ox, and John the Theologian as an eagle.
This particular icon is a wonderful example of the skills of the monks of Mount Athos. Additionally, it features a remarkable element: its base is made from naturally aged wood that comes from restoration work on a cell of Mount Athos.
Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
The icon is available upon request.
