In Orthodox Christianity, Jesus is compared to the Bridegroom, as in His person a sacred “marriage” takes place—the union of God and humanity—while simultaneously, we have in one person the coexistence of God and man. Therefore, Christ is also called the “Bridegroom of the Church.” Moreover, the relationship between husband and wife is compared by the Apostle Paul to the relationship between Christ and the Church. In the person of Christ, we see His limitless love for mankind, for all of humanity, because only with this love could He make such a sacrifice, that is, to become a humble man, to suffer, and ultimately to be crucified.
