Description
Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd
The Lord, in the parable recorded in the Gospel of John (10:11), said, “I am the good shepherd.” He compared Himself to a shepherd, to a shepherd who has the Church as His flock, meaning the faithful.
Jesus, as a loving and good shepherd, genuinely loves and cares for His flock. He nurtures and constantly tends to it. He takes care of all the needs of the members of His flock and is concerned about their safety and protection.
The parable of the Good Shepherd aims to highlight God’s immense love for mankind. While God may be infinite, man can still develop a personal relationship of love with Him.
The second element that reveals the Lord’s love is that He established His flock not to gain something from it, as human shepherds might from their flock, but to provide His sheep with the riches of grace. A profound spiritual bond is formed between the Good Shepherd and each of His rational sheep.
The Lord’s love for His flock is so great that if one sheep strays from the fold, He does not ignore it. He secures the others and quickly goes to find the one that is lost.
