Description

Deposition – Serigraph on Naturally Aged Wood

This is a serigraph on naturally aged wood depicting the Deposition of Jesus Christ’s body from the Cross. The Deposition, a popular theme in Christian art, became widespread in Byzantine art from the 9th century and in the West from the 10th century. In these depictions, the Virgin Mary, the Evangelist John, Christ’s beloved disciple, and often three other women known as the Three Maries, including Mary Magdalene, are present.

According to Orthodox tradition, the Deposition was carried out by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, Jewish leaders and secret disciples of Christ. Joseph requested the body of Jesus from Pilate for burial. After receiving permission, they took the body down from the Cross, wrapped it in a “clean linen,” and placed it in a tomb for burial.

This particular image, like all others in this category, has been painted on naturally aged wood from a restored cell in Mount Athos. The wood comes from materials such as beams that once supported cells, were doors, or even stairs, and through special preservation techniques used by the monks, these elements are transformed into unique icons.

Through “Mount Athos Heritage,” these collectible icons can be acquired by those who wish to possess a piece of the living tradition of Mount Athos.

As the image is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, slight variations in the wood may occur, but not in the depiction.
